Supplements

So basically the choices seem overwhelming, and if one has no experience with a certain supplement, it makes me nervous to use it, especially in conjunction with a slew of other ones. I’d love to narrow it down, for example, hearing which ones are most important, which ones are effective in most cases. I know this is a giant question. I think I’m not the only one feeling daunted by the volume of supplements in these products and how to apply them confidently and effectively. We were presented the supplements for the patterns, the case studies, which we’re all pretty happy with supplements and then kind of moved on without a live webinar with Chris to fill in more.

Dr. Amy Nett: Yeah, so definitely ask questions with the live webinar with Chris next time. I know it was...

What’s your take on maca as supplement for HPA-D? It’s an ingredient in some adrenal support products like Integrative Therapeutics’ HPA Adapt. I’ve tried it on myself but it disrupted my period. Being Chinese we call it “unable to tolerate the yang or weakness that isn’t suited for replacement therapy with yang.

Dr. Amy Nett:  Maca isn’t something that I have a lot of experience with. You should remember that maca is...

Are the adaptogenic herbs safe to use for cases of low and high cortisol? Or are the adaptogenic herbs safe to use for cases or low or high cortisol except for panax ginseng?

Chris Kresser:  Yeah, I mean it kind of depends on which form of cortisol, like whether free cortisol is high...

Is BioCBD what you’d recommend for CBD? Other than anxiety, does it help in general for neural inflammation? Also in regards to Addison’s, you mentioned glandulars, adaptogens, and licorice. Have you used this protocol effectively before?

Chris Kresser:  So for CBD there are a lot of different options. Water-soluble CBD is generally better. BioCBD is good....

What does the research say about supplementing with CoQ10 versus ubiquinol?

Chris Kresser:   So I think you mean ubiquinone versus ubiquinol. They’re different forms of CoQ10. Dr. Mercola makes a big...

You mentioned that vitamin K supplementation may be contraindicated for people on warfarin. Does that include Plavix in the case of a patient with stents who is supplementing with D? Can they get enough from animal sources to balance that?

Chris Kresser:  Yeah, it would include any anticoagulant drug. Vitamin K is definitely contraindicated. There’s some controversy about whether K2...

Should one be concerned about supplementing with vitamin C, based on some studies showing that it acts as a pro-oxidant? Is there a dose above which it acts as a pro-oxidant?

Chris Kresser:  Virtually all so-called antioxidants work as pro-oxidants, so that shouldn’t necessarily concern us. Pro-oxidants that have an antioxidant...
