Dr. Amy Nett: No, we generally go with magnesium glycinate. I think some people think magnesium threonate may be particularly beneficial in terms of kind of relaxation and sleep, but, no, we generally recommend magnesium glycinate or magnesium malate. In general, magnesium glycinate is sort of our go-to recommendation for general health. Magnesium malate we sometimes use a little bit more if there is a musculoskeletal issue, maybe muscle cramping or something like that, and magnesium citrate we use a little bit less commonly. Magnesium citrate is the main ingredient in Natural Calm. It draws fluid into the colon, so if you’re really stuck with—as we were just talking about—constipation issues, you can do some Natural Calm, which is magnesium citrate. Your patient may get loose stools with that, often undesirable, so it’s sort of used rarely and only when needed. So number one, magnesium glycinate. Number two, magnesium malate, and again, magnesium malate I think of “M” musculoskeletal stuff.
