Skin Conditions

Would you recommend treating a person who has fungus in his nails, low income, and no chances for testing?

Dr. Amy Nett: That is such a tough one because I have some patients who have fungal infections around the...

Is gluten in skin care products absorbed through the skin? And if so, does it have the same effects as ingested gluten?

Chris Kresser:  Some people with celiac report that they do respond to gluten in skin care products. There is not...

As far as dandruff and work-ups, do I usually see a correlation with fungal issues? I was just curious if there was a strong indicator or have you seen other issues. Great article in regards to immune system. From experience working with these types of behaviors, what type of improvement have you seen? Can you give a case example?

Dr. Amy Nett:  Gosh, not always. Okay so two parts to this. So number one as far as dandruff, boy,...

For a severe acne protocol designed for a woman, would you use all food or also add in some supplements?

Kelsey Kinney:  I typically would add in some supplements here, and what I would think about is a lot things,...

I’m on day 12 of the 30-day reset diet and have been perfect with the diet. Today, I woke up with an itchy, raised, red rash on the entire left side of my neck, partially in my cheek an arm. Is this possibly a detox reaction? I have not changed any cosmetics, detergent, creams. I don’t typically have food allergies. Last year, I went on a ketogenic diet and after a couple of weeks had a similar rash but on my trunk. What do you think, and how long does a detox skin reaction last?

Dr. Amy Nett:  Great question. Everyone manifest these things a little bit differently. Is it possible that it’s a detox...

What was the topical cream recommend for granuloma annulare?

Dr. Amy Nett:  Oh, there is not a specific group for granuloma annulare, sorry. I use a cream like if...

What about someone who felt like they had their acne under control with eating a Paleo diet and supporting hormones, but then once they started on parasite and bacterial protocols, acne flared? Even when they stopped the protocol, it didn’t go away.

Dr. Amy Nett:  This sounds like sort of a detox or die-off type reaction, and it’s really frustrating for patients...

Woman coming in wants to prep herself for getting pregnant—35, birth control since 16. A few months ago, she went off birth control, experienced very bad acne, and so she went back on. Says the acne was the reason she went on when she was 16. This is a very common story of course, and I’m sure many of you have seen this lots of times. Done comprehensive blood. She looks pretty good outside of some functional iron deficiency, lack of protein in her diet, possible HCl, and electrolyte imbalances. Advised Paleo reset and then hormone testing. What tests do you suggest, and should they be done when on birth control or at some point went off the pills? I want to prep well before she goes off BCs so she can have less symptoms and then regulate her conception.

Chris Kresser: Yes. Definitely like a DUTCH test what are you going to be learning about shortly after hormones and...

I have a 59-year-old female patient with severe psoriasis, cracked palms, and plaques behind the ears, elbow flexors, tibia. Food sensitivity includes many foods. Candida screen shows elevated levels. Food sensitivities are removed. Did a month of berberis and grapefruit seed extract and now a month with tincture of matricaria, filipendula, mentha, and althea. No GI complaints, however. Topically made an avocado-infused calendula with beeswax, lavender, and liquid ghee, and she’s getting 20 minutes of sun outdoors. Any good protocols on how to deal with psoriasis?

Chris Kresser: Psoriasis is almost always gut related. I hate to sound like a broken record here, but I had...

Week 18 refers to acne rosacea being signs of low stomach acid. What nutrient deficiencies in particular are contributing to these skin changes?

Chris: Well, what I would say is that low stomach acid is a risk factor for SIBO because if the...
