Pregnancy & Breastfeeding

For pregnancy, what do you use primarily as food for supplementation, and what actual supplements are still needed? Let’s assume no aversions as a starting point.

Kelsey Kinney:  I’m not entirely sure I understand the question here. I assume maybe you’re asking food for supplement, like...

If a woman has blood sugar issues, what do you recommend in pregnancy in terms of carbs?

Kelsey Marksteiner:   Really what I try to do with pregnancy is simply to track the blood sugar, so have the...

In the Healthy Baby Code, Chris says a healthy target for fat is a ratio of between 50 to 70 percent of calories from fat. If someone has blood sugar issues and is therefore probably going to need to be at the 70 percent end of that range, can you give us examples of what that might look like on the plate—breakfast, lunch, and dinner?

Kelsey Marksteiner:  Let’s kind of walk through this together here. I did a little bit of calculation before we sat...

I have a client that has adopted a baby from abroad. The baby was C-sectioned, and they can’t breastfeed. The baby is two months old. What are the best ways to help the microbiome in this situation? Any good formulas that have HMOs [human milk oligosaccharides]?

Laura Schoenfeld:  Can you tell me what HMOs are? I’m not sure if you mean some kind of bacteria.  ...

Just wondering what you feel about prenatal multivitamins. I understand the shortcomings of multivitamins and that it’s better to get nutrition from food, but just so you are not missing out on something that you couldn’t even imagine that you’re missing, which prenatal vitamin do you recommend, and what other supplements do you recommend for prenatal care or specific food quantities, including things like liver, how many time a week?

Laura Schoenfeld:   let me look this up for you because I have a prenatal that I personally really like. My...

I’ve been looking at the various prenatal recommendations from ADAPT people. Laura likes Prothera, I like Seeking Health, Chris likes Nutrient 950. As I always say, there are pros and cons to all—yes, I do. So I am just struggling with a few questions. Number one, Nutrient 950, with Vitamin K, has 400 milligrams of—sorry, it has 400 IUs of Vitamin E. Isn’t there some controversy with Vitamin E in pregnancy?

Dr. Amy Nett: Yeah, I do have some concern about, you know, tocopherols in pregnancies, so I think even Chris...

Biotin in the Healthy Baby Code, Chris recommends 30 to 65 mcg a day, and in Nutrient 950 with K, it has 800 mcg in the daily servings, Seeking Health, 500 mcg—any thoughts?

Dr. Amy Nett: Yeah, so again, I don’t know why they formulate them this way. Remember, B vitamins are mostly...

What is your take on 400 IU, Vitamin E, which are in good quality prenatals?

Dr. Amy Nett:  You’re thinking about the Pure Encapsulations Nutrient 950.   So again, Chris doesn’t recommend the Nutrient 950 for...

What is your go-to prenatal multivitamin, or which brands would you most recommend checking out? I noticed Thorne has beta-carotene and vitamin K as K1.

Dr. Amy Nett: Yeah, and I think this was a somewhat related question last time or the time before. At...

Regarding the women’s health material from Week 11 and iron deficiency and supplementation in pregnancy, is ferritin the best single test for determining true iron deficiency during pregnancy when hemoglobin levels normally decrease?

Dr. Amy Nett: Ferritin is useful. I would still look at the full iron panel. I would use a full...
