  4. I’ve been looking at the various prenatal recommendations from ADAPT people. Laura likes Prothera, I like Seeking Health, Chris likes Nutrient 950. As I always say, there are pros and cons to all—yes, I do. So I am just struggling with a few questions. Number one, Nutrient 950, with Vitamin K, has 400 milligrams of—sorry, it has 400 IUs of Vitamin E. Isn’t there some controversy with Vitamin E in pregnancy?

I’ve been looking at the various prenatal recommendations from ADAPT people. Laura likes Prothera, I like Seeking Health, Chris likes Nutrient 950. As I always say, there are pros and cons to all—yes, I do. So I am just struggling with a few questions. Number one, Nutrient 950, with Vitamin K, has 400 milligrams of—sorry, it has 400 IUs of Vitamin E. Isn’t there some controversy with Vitamin E in pregnancy?

Dr. Amy Nett: Yeah, I do have some concern about, you know, tocopherols in pregnancies, so I think even Chris recommends the Nutrient 950 during pregnancy. And then you mentioned that the Seeking Health one has 200, and all the others have a much larger dose. So I would agree I would have some reluctance to do the 400 IU of vitamin E that’s in the Nutrient 950 during pregnancy. I would agree. And then you said, “In the Nutrient 950, with K, a lot of the B vitamins are much higher than in the others,” and then you give an example of the Nutrient 950, thiamine is 100 mg, whereas in Seeking Health it’s 5 mg. Can I explain why that might be.

No, I don’t know why they chose their formulations they do, but what I can say is, you might use that in terms of deciding which one of those multivitamins you want to use for certain patients. So, if you have somebody that you think, you know, might be more sensitive to B vitamins, you might want to go with the Seeking Health or another option, that has a lower dose. Another option is, you know, with any of these, I think the Nutrient 950—I don’t remember exactly, but I want to say the full dose, so when you’re looking at that dosage information, that’s for something like six pills, and similarly the Nutrient 950—I mean the Seeking Health prenatal—the full dose recommendation there, is, I think, eight capsules, daily. So, you know, in some of my patients, I actually recommend they only take, like a half dose or something like that, because most people that we’re working with are on, you know a nutrient diet, hence, Paleo diet. So, think about that too, when you’re sort of calculating the amount of B vitamins, but do think about the amount of B vitamins. But again, I don’t know, you know, the amount of companies use to determine what support they use, but I would say Nutrient 950 is probably a little bit stronger in terms of its support. I think it has, as you’re mentioning, higher levels of a lot of these nutrients, so you could either cut the dosage in half or go with a multivitamin that has lower levels.

And then you said your next part of this question, methylcobalamin, in Nutrient 950, has 1,000 mcg, Seeking Health has 150 mg. I don’t know if you mean milligrams—yeah, 150 mg—okay, compared to the 5 to 10 mcg per day Chris recommends in the Healthy Baby Code. Yeah, again, huge variation in the amount of the amount of multi, you know, in the amount of B vitamins, in each of these. And again, remember we don’t always use multivitamins. It is pretty rare that we use multivitamins, and again, you can also think about supplementing with individual nutrients if you’re uncomfortable with the doses listed there.
