Practice Management

LabCorp has a large IgG food panel. Patient brought the results in and the lab picked up a lot. What do you think about that?

Chris Kresser:  I don’t have a lot of confidence in it. Back when we talked about the Cyrex arrays, I...

In the case review process you’ve outlined, you mentioned you require an in-office case review appointment. Is this a personal or practice management decision or is it mandated by state law or a licensing body? In planning a potential virtual practice, I was wondering if all patient visits could be virtual?

Chris Kresser:   The answer is both. For me personally, I prefer to see patients in person for the initial visit...

What’s the best method to test zinc and copper?

Chris Kresser:  We’re going to cover that in more detail in the blood chemistry section, Leslie. Zinc and copper, you...

I asked about your phone system yesterday and then saw on your website you have someone actually answer the phone six hours a week. You have people apply before becoming a new patient. Why do you do this, and do you recommend it for us?

Chris Kresser:  I think I mentioned this in the Q&A, but we, for many years, didn’t have anyone answering the...

We’ve tried several methods of charting blood test results to visually depict functional reference ranges versus lab reference ranges to aid interpretation and provide to patients. Initially we used a custom Word document template, but found it to be rather time consuming. Doctor’s Choice and Science-Based Nutrition and other commercial options are useful, but we cannot input our own functional ranges. Do you use custom software or have another system for charting functional ranges?

Chris Kresser:  I don’t. We are kind of old school. I guess we’re a step up from a Word document....

Where can a patient go in California if they’re interested in a fecal transplant?

Chris Kresser:  Unfortunately, nowhere. Right now fecal transplants are only … Well, let me revise my answer. Fecal transplants are...

If you use the NutrEval by Genova, could you comment on how to use it as an alternative for the organic acids test? I run this test often for nutrient status and oxidative stress markers and see they have urine biomarkers for malabsorption and bacterial dysbiosis, but the markers are not exactly the same as the organic acids biomarkers you’ve referenced, and I’m not sure how to interpret them as such. I wonder if I could use the urine biomarkers from the NutrEval as data similar to organic acids since I’m ordering this test anyway.

Chris Kresser:  The answer is yes. The markers, as you point out, are not exactly the same, but that doesn’t...

Can you explain more about the customized sample meal plans that you provide to the client and where you get these from? They are so tedious to do. We need to update ours, and I’m looking for a reference outside data to consult with.

Laura Schoenfeld:  So, I don’t do the customized sample meal plans. That is something that Kelsey does for her clients,...

How did you figure out the legality of virtual consults, especially when you’re ordering tests, interpreting, and offering treatments?

Kelsey Marksteiner:   I say in my basically waiver that people are filling out that as a dietitian I can’t diagnose...

If you use Genova for your tests, would that mean you have to follow the rules for insurance? Genova requires an ICD-10 code and bills insurance.

Kelsey Marksteiner:  The way I use Genova testing is I do it through Direct Labs because I can’t order it...
