Would it be okay to just have a piece of fruit before working out, or do you need to combine with protein right off the bat?

Laura Schoenfeld:  I’d say right before working out, just having carbs is fine. The reason why you want to generally...

Are there alternatives to lactoferrin for those who are dairy sensitive.

Dr. Amy Nett: So if you’re talking about lactoferrin in terms of being used for a biofilm disruptor, then you...

This is a case. So a 69-year-old male, history of bad temper, uncontrolled temper, poor socialization, mood swings, yo-yo dieting. He snores, mild sleep apnea, carbohydrate cravings, currently doing about an 80/20 primal diet. Other 20 percent is conventional Standard American Diet food, including gluten. There were yellow, so antibodies in the equivocal range for gluteomorphin IgG. Cyrex also showed red for tissue transglutaminase-2, gliadin, gliadin transglutaminase complex, omega gliadin, alpha-gliadin, and native and deamidated gliadin. Highly suspicious for celiac. Should they get conventional celiac blood work and endoscopy? What if conventional testing shows negative? He also had significantly elevated or out of range antibodies to all dairy in the Cyrex. The Genova organic acids suggested folate, biotin, and amino acid deficiencies. My case also had yellow to all meat on Cyrex.

Dr. Amy Nett:  If there is any question as to whether or not he’s going to continue eating wheat, then...

So I know we’ve spoken about enzymes in the past. A SIBO patient is tolerating foods much better with three caps of HCl but still notices fruit intolerance. Would a more diverse enzyme be helpful here? Or is it a fructose intolerance?

Dr. Amy Nett: So you could certainly try Digestzymes or something like that, or even like Now Brand or Jarrow...

I have a patient with long-standing depression, episodes of suicidal thoughts. Chief complaints are morning fatigue, bacterial vaginosis, skin issues, and depression. She believes depression can change even after 24 years. Gluten and dairy free for years. Recent labs indicated anemia. Not sure if it’s B12, B6, folate, or iron. She’s responsive to eating more animal protein, which is good. She doesn’t seem to eat enough in general. Her mom requested OAT lab as they’ve tried everything else, including working with a functional medicine practitioner. I’d like your input on the OAT results below and any other thoughts.

Chris Kresser:  Well, before we even get into OAT, anemia is absolutely associated with depression. And so if it’s iron-deficient...

When reintroducing a food after eliminating it, some resources list a change in heart rate about 10 minutes after eating the food as an indication that the food might be a problem. Do you agree? I haven’t heard you mention this.

Chris Kresser:  Certainly it could be. I mean, that’s a sign of a stress response, right? Like a fight or...

After elimination diet, people reintroduce one at a time and after three days without symptoms they can assume that food is safe. But I’ve seen some people who seem to have symptoms only after consuming food regularly for several days. I know this myself. I can have a tomato here and there, but if I eat a lot of tomatoes over a few days, my joints begin to hurt. Is this common? If so, does it call into question the accuracy of the reintroduction phase?

Chris Kresser:  Yeah, I don’t know that it’s common but it’s certainly true that foods can have a cumulative effect...

I noticed that when you and Chris talk about doing approaches for fungal treatment, you don’t talk about a restricted candida type diet. Do you ever use restricted diets like this when treating fungal overgrowth? On the same topic, some other practitioners I know think that when yeast show up on the stool test even to a mild degree that there’s a likelihood it could be deeply entrenched yeasting candida that doesn’t slough off into this. Oh, let’s see, there’s a likelihood it could be deeply entrenched that doesn’t slough off into the stool and should be treated aggressively. What do you think about this?

Dr. Amy Nett:  Okay, so a couple things. Candida diet. So there is quite, candida diets I think became pretty...

n the magnesium deficiency section there is data presented that essentially everyone is consuming too little magnesium except young children under nine. Why are they an exception?

Dr. Amy Nett:  Great question. I don’t know why children under nine are an exception and I don’t know if...

I’m still a bit unclear about physiology behind unintentional calorie restriction for weight loss. Are we trying to trick the brain into thinking it’s getting more food?

Chris Kresser:  Not exactly. What we’re trying to do is convince the brain that we’re not starving essentially. Because that...
