What is being measured for copper and zinc serum?

Dr. Amy Nett:  So copper and zinc in the serum, what you’re measuring there is the level of those minerals in the serum. As opposed to measuring inside the cell. I’m not entirely clear on the question. I ran it by Chris as well and he agreed that we’re really just measuring the level of those minerals in the serum. And I think we did talk about one or two weeks ago that copper and zinc, when you’re measuring serum levels, they’re not great markers for the nutrient status and they’re not particularly affected significantly by supplementation. They tend to be better markers really just for inflammation, is why we talk about the ratio of copper and zinc. So we more often look at the ratio of those minerals in the serum as a marker of inflammation rather than nutrient status.
