Dr. Amy Nett: Neither Chris and I are certain about a relationship between blood levels of MMA and creatinine. So the only things we could sort of come up with in terms of what that might be referring to: One, is we’re looking at MMA on a urine organic acids test. I think urinary creatinine might affect urinary MMA, so urinary MMA might be less accurate in diabetics, so maybe that was one possibility.
The other thing is serum methylmalonic acid, or MMA, can be thrown off by SIBO. So in patients who have SIBO, you might want to look at urine methylmalonic acid instead of serum MMA. So that might be what you’re referring to, but otherwise, I’m not certain what context that was in, so hopefully that answers it.
