  4. I’m confused on week 37, part 4 teaching on reverse T3, so rT3-to-T3 ratio. So the rT3 ratio. Chris quotes that the optimal ratio should be above 20 if using free T3 and above 10 with total T3. I’m confused because I would think that you would want the ratio to be low rather than high.

Dr. Amy Nett:  So the ratio, the way you calculate it is the total T3 or free T3 to reverse T3. And then that ratio should be 20 using free T3 and 10 with total T3. So if you input rT3 ratio calculator or if you go to Stop the Thyroid Madness, you should be able to see how that ratio is calculated and you’ll see, maybe that’ll make a little bit more sense in terms of why you’re looking for the over 20 or over 10 depending on whether using free T3 or total T3, respectively. And then she just goes on to say, “On page 5 and the examples that he gives.”

So yes, those are correct and it might be helpful to work through those and it might, I’m trying to think here, go to StoptheThyroidMadness.com and look at the rT3 ratio calculator, and that might make a little bit more sense then in terms of how we’re calculating those and why you want the ratio to be that way. But you should be putting total T3 or free T3 divided by reverse T3 to get the ratio.
