Aside from inflammation and iron overload, what other factors can elevate ferritin? I seem to recall learning that elevated testosterone is one possibility.

Dr. Amy Nett:  I don’t think I know of other causes of elevated ferritin other than high iron and inflammation. I’m trying to think. There are some, well now I’m trying to think, even that I think is hemochromatosis causes that. Yeah, I’m not sure I know of other causes specifically because I mean you can think infection, but then that’s inflammation. I would say the only two causes I’m really aware of. I don’t know if anyone else knows, you might post that to the Facebook group and see if anyone else knows. And even when I’ve seen patients coming in with high testosterone levels, I don’t consistently see high ferritin. So I’m not sure about their relationship.  I think there was a suggestion that certain genetic conditions cause high iron overload, but I think those genetic conditions are mostly hemochromatosis. I think the genetic conditions that are associated with high ferritin include hemochromatosis, which is high iron. So I’m not sure if there’s a genetic condition that specifically just increases ferritin.
