You cautioned to avoid long-term use of MagO7, [which is] oxygenated magnesium. What do you consider long-term?

Chris Kresser: Next question from Liz, “You cautioned to avoid long-term use of MagO7, [which is] oxygenated magnesium. What do you consider long-term? I have a new patient who’s been using it for over a month. When she [stops] she does not move her bowels.”

This is another ideal versus actual thing here, and ideally, we would identify and address the conditions that are causing constipation like methane-predominant SIBO, address those, regain the ability to have normal bowel movements without the MagO7, and we move on. Sometimes, that’s not possible right away, or maybe, in some cases, never possible, and I would prefer them using MagO7 longer term than Senna, for example, or cascara sagrada or another stimulant laxative, but I would consider long-term more like three to six months, not one month.
