Laura Schoenfeld: So, Jenny, as far as Bulletproof coffee is concerned, I think that it’s one of these things that has a little bit of a hype to it. I know there are people out there that have benefitted from Bulletproof coffee and feel really good when they do intermittent fasting combined with Bulletproof coffee. I don’t particularly like Bulletproof coffee. If people are unfamiliar with what Bulletproof coffee is, it’s basically just coffee combined … well, it’s a special kind of, I guess, mold-free coffee that’s combined with, I want to say, two to four tablespoons of coconut oil and grass-fed butter, and it gets blended up. It tastes pretty good, so there’s definitely some enjoyment factor to it, but the question would be, would having four tablespoons of isolated fat as one of your meals really be either nutrient-dense or supporting your particular health needs? Now, if somebody is on a ketogenic diet and really needs a ton of fat to make up for the calories that they wouldn’t be getting from carbs and they need a really big hit of fat in the morning, then Bulletproof coffee is probably fine. But if somebody is on a more moderate-carb Paleo diet or doesn’t feel good when they don’t eat breakfast or maybe has some blood sugar dysregulation issues or has certain mental health symptoms, like, for example, anxiety is not a good symptom that mixes with Bulletproof coffee.
Again, it’s going to depend on the patient. I’d say most of the time I don’t promote Bulletproof coffee as a regular, everyday thing. Having a little coffee with some butter blended into it as the fat source for the coffee is fine, but I think having four tablespoons of isolated fat and also not having anything else with that in the morning doesn’t always work well for people. I’ve had a lot of clients that get really jittery on it. I’ve had clients that started to gain weight because maybe their blood sugar was not being well controlled or maybe they were getting too many calories because of the four tablespoons of fat. Maybe they were too low carb and they were doing a lot of activity that requires carbs, and that’s a big stressor on the body. So Bulletproof coffee, I’d say for most people, isn’t really a great idea. Having a little coffee with some fat in it in the morning is totally fine, but having that be the entire meal that you have until noon is not always going to work well for a lot of patients.
