Should we attempt to support serotonin production in patients with high cortisol?

Chris Kresser: Next question from Ariel, “Should we attempt to support serotonin production in patients with high cortisol?”

I don’t tend to do that. In most cases, the behavior and lifestyle changes are best for that, and a lot of my patients at least don’t tend to do that well with things that impact serotonin levels. Some of the formulas we use have 5-HTP [5-hydroxytryptophan], St. John’s wort, stuff like that can be helpful, but I think you have to really use caution with that, especially if you’re not experienced or familiar with modulating brain chemistry. It can get tricky.
