Chris Kresser:  So the deal with that diet as you know as I explained, I think is that the reason people spontaneously eat less is because potatoes when they’re just steamed or boiled and have no butter or salt or oil or flavorings are fairly bland. You’re not going to eat a lot of them. You’re pretty much going to eat what you’re hungry for and that’s about it. The more things you add to them, whether it’s salt, or pepper, or anything else, the more palatable they become and the more likely it is that overeating, and I don’t mean overeating in the sense of gluttonous overeating, I just mean….

Let me put it a different way: the less likely it is that the goals will be achieved. And ultimately, if the patient needs to add a little bit of salt and pepper to make this doable, I think that that is better than them not doing it at all. And very likely the effect of that will be fairly minimal. But just know that the more things that are added to it, the less, the further it’s straying from the original intent and the more likely it is that the patient will, the hedonic mechanisms which govern food intake will override those homeostatic mechanisms.
