Chris Kresser: Next question from Christy, “On the last call, Chris mentioned that he doesn’t find the Cyrex 12 test helpful, and I’m curious why.”

I just referred to that. It just is testing for antibodies to infectious agents, but it doesn’t tell you whether you have a current active infection, and that’s the challenge with antibody testing for chronic infections, as I’m sure many of you know. When you see antibodies, it doesn’t tell you with certainty whether the infection is still current. In theory, IgG [immunoglobulin G] antibodies indicate a previous infection and IgM [immunoglobulin M] antibodies indicate a current infection, but there are many cases where the infection is current and you won’t see IgM antibodies, and those are the trickier conditions to diagnose. So Cyrex 12 can be a starting place, but it’s not the end of the story in almost all cases.
