In the GERD treatment section, one suggested step is supplementing with digestive enzymes, but no specific product is recommended. Is there a particular product recommendation that you’ve had success with or general guidelines to look for when shopping for a product?

Dr. Amy Nett: For digestive enzymes, we commonly use Digestzymes. I think that’s a Designs For Health product. Digestzymes is one that we like, but there’s a lot of flexibility in terms of what you use for digestive enzymes. NOW brand makes one called Super Enzymes, and for someone who’s really cost conscious, that’s probably a reasonable one. If you’re concerned about using HCl in someone, you might want to look for other options. Maybe papaya enzymes would be something, or look for a digestive enzyme that doesn’t contain HCl. Some of them have higher levels of HCl, so you can look at the different ingredients, but I would say just go with a reputable brand that you trust. I think we happen to use the Digestzymes from Designs For Health, but again, anything from Thorne or Pure Encapsulations, those are all going to be fine.
