In patients with type 2 diabetes that do intermittent fasting or exercise and a fast, some get an increase in blood glucose. In this case is it advisable to not do intermittent fasting?

Chris Kresser: That’s a topic of debate and I’m not sure that I can answer that exclusively. Typically you want to spend as little time in a hyperglycemic state as possible. So I would say generally we want to do whatever we can to reduce blood sugar, and if that means avoiding intermittent fasting, then yes, I mean especially because the point of intermittent fasting in many cases is to have the opposite effect. So if it’s not having that effect, then I would say no, that we should probably not advise intermittent fasting in that situation.
