Chris Kresser: Well, post-concussion syndrome involves brain trauma, obviously, and whenever you’re talking about brain trauma, there’s microglial activation and inflammation, so things like curcumin can be really helpful in reducing brain inflammation. I mean, it depends on what their overall situation is. Curcumin could be contraindicated if a patient is taking blood thinners. You want to keep that in mind. Boswellia is a good anti-inflammatory substance. DHA, the long-chain omega-3 fat, is great for brain health and reducing inflammation in the brain. Bone broth, I think, after any kind of trauma, is really helpful because of the glycine and collagen. A low-carb and ketogenic diet may be useful in that situation. With epilepsy and other brain-related conditions, Parkinson’s, it has been shown to be effective because the brain really thrives on ketones. Those are just a few ideas to try.

Patient reported eating a low-carb Paleo diet. Would we assume the patient is not getting enough zinc from other food sources like meat and eggs? How long and in what amount would you supplement with zinc? Also, what’s the relationship between potentially inadequate vitamin A intake and anxiety?
