Michelle Sang, MD, FACOG

Michelle Sang, MD, FACOG, is a board-certified OB/GYN who has been in clinical practice since 1998. She is native to Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, but was raised in Portland, Oregon. She attended Harvard – Radcliffe College and received a Bachelor of Applied Science in Biology with honors for her undergraduate education. She then returned to Oregon to complete medical school at Oregon Health Sciences University (OHSU) and graduated in 1994. She remained at OHSU for her four-year residency training in OB/GYN. She chose this specialty because it allowed her to really connect with her patients. More recently, she has been exposed to the world of Functional and integrative medicine, which has inspired her to expand her expertise beyond her conventional western medicine training. She has completed the Kresser Institute ADAPT Practitioner Training Program as well as the Aviva Romm Women’s Functional and Integrative Medicine Professional Training Program. She is a member of the Institute of Functional Medicine.

Early on, she was drawn to women’s health due to the breadth and variety of care within her field. She still finds it amazingly satisfying to this day! She is able to provide primary care and preventative care through annual exams, which also affords a connection and continuity through all phases of a woman’s life. She currently focuses on lifestyle areas including nutrition, movement, stress management, and sleep hygiene as the key factors to maintain mental and physical health as women age. In addition, she includes thyroid function, diabetes risk assessment, and weight management as part of her Women’s Health toolkit.

Practicing obstetrics is an incredible privilege. The bond created with a woman when providing prenatal, labor-management, and postnatal care is indescribable. Each birth is a unique and miraculous experience. She sees patients at their best and at their most vulnerable moments. This gives her insight into their support system and the strength of the relationship with their partners. In this process, she guides them on how to nourish themselves in order to have the best obstetric and personal health outcomes. Together, they experience the full spectrum of extreme joy and sometimes, unfortunately, incredible loss.

Gynecology gives her the opportunity to work with patients in all phases of their life related to the menstrual cycle (pre-, peri-, and post-menopause, hormone imbalance, abnormal menses, PCOS, infertility, and endometriosis), screen for and provide pre-cancer treatment (vulva, cervix, and uterus), evaluate for infectious disease or imbalance (HPV, other STDs, candida, and BV), assess and manage pelvic floor disorders (prolapse, incontinence, and pelvic pain), and counsel women on sexual health (sexual function and libido). Often the subject matter is embarrassing or sensitive to discuss. She has built relationships on trust and respect so her patients are comfortable sharing their most personal concerns.

Her training and experience have also given her strong surgical skills. She performs many office and operating room procedures related to her specialty.

She uses her conventional, Functional, and integrative medicine knowledge to evaluate and recommend treatment based on the root cause of her patient’s problems with the goal of promoting healing from and prevention of chronic illness. Utilizing the principles of Functional and integrative medicine, she believes that she can make a more meaningful impact on addressing chronic disease, creating a shift toward wellness, and exposing women to the tools they need to focus on healthspan as they age.
