I’ve heard that sulfur-containing supplements including acetylcysteine, alpha-lipoic acid, and glutathione may worsen fungal infections. Is there any evidence to back this up?

Dr. Amy Nett:  I haven’t actually seen any studies suggesting that sulfur-containing supplements would worsen fungal infections. So I don’t know if you have any papers that suggest that. Because most organisms, including both bacteria and fungi, can certainly oxidize and and therefore obtain energy from sulfur. Clinically, I haven’t seen a clear association between using sulfur-containing supplements and worsening of a fungal infection. And oftentimes we are using glutathione when someone will have a yeast infection because often we’re working on detox as well. So it’s certainly not something that I’ve seen very consistently. And yeah, again, I don’t know of any research that supports that. So I’m not sure what sources you’ve heard that from. But certainly pass those along if you have some more information if there are any publications on that.
