Chris Kresser: Absolutely. Yes. A neuroinflammatory process, I would be focusing a lot on the gut. We have all this research showing correlations between Alzheimer’s and the gut, Parkinson’s and the gut, epilepsy and the gut, autism spectrum disorders, other neurological conditions and the gut, so that would certainly be my focus. I would also be looking at nutrient deficiency, you know, B12 deficiency in particular. Zinc-copper imbalance is a sign of inflammation, not because copper or zinc are actually nutritionally low. We’re going to talk about that in the blood chemistry section. I would look at the HPA axis as well because we know that stress plays a huge role—forgive me for stating the obvious—but the neurological system is highly impacted by stress hormones and neurotransmitters, so yes, I would do a whole thing together and treat it like any other functional medicine case.
