Dr. Amy Nett:  Essential ingredients in the matula herbal formulas are wild olive, wormwood, aloe, thorn tree, … I don’t know how to pronounce this, so I’m going to sort of ballpark it—crataegus, and licorice, their fruits, stems, and leaves. It has a number of different antimicrobial compounds in it, at least some of these. I don’t know what crataegus is or thorn tree, but certainly olive and wormwood potentially have antimicrobial properties. I couldn’t find a single peer-reviewed study in the scientific literature. Neither Chris nor I have used matula tea in treatment of Helicobacter pylori. Empirically it may have some value. Certainly given that some of these ingredients are potentially potent antimicrobials, it might treat Helicobacter pylori. Just because there’s not scientific research on it doesn’t mean you have to avoid it, but it’s not something that we’ve used, it’s not something that I’m aware of has published literature on it, but those are the ingredients, so if you’ve found that it works for you, that’s OK. It certainly makes sense that it would. I don’t have any more specific opinion on it. That’s about all I know on it.
