Laura Schoenfeld: I don’t know if probiotics don’t at all. I know that they’re not as effective as prebiotics for increasing the numbers of beneficial gut bacteria. It’s possible that they don’t. I’m not 100 percent sure of the exact action of probiotics, whether they don’t increase the beneficial gut flora at all or if it’s just a little bit. I just know that prebiotics are more effective. That’s the only thing I can say about that question. You might want to ask Chris or Amy if they want to clarify if probiotics affect the number of beneficial gut bacteria at all.
