Dr. Amy Nett: I don’t think you can actually get the FH gene information from 23andMe. The only test I know of actually that looks at the gene, the genetics for familial hypercholesterolemia is actually something like, it’s like a $2,000 test. So I think we’ve only had one patient who’s actually elected to do that genetic test. Because it doesn’t always change the treatment in that if you’re not bringing cholesterol levels down with treatment, you’re going to be doing dietary changes like a Mediterranean Paleo diet, something like that. So again I don’t think it’s available to mine that data from 23andMe at this point.
And then you’re saying he talks about APOE, this is a gene we all have. Yes we all have an APOE gene, it’s just which variant of the APOE gene we have.
