Do you just do the macronutrients or all of the fruits and non-starchy veggies too?

Laura Schoenfeld:  So I definitely do fruit because fruit does contain calories and carbs generally. Well, yes, all fruit contains some amount of carbs but just will depend on what kind of fruit you’re eating. And non-starchy veggies, if somebody wants to be really precise, then yes I do suggest doing the non-starchy veggies. But if somebody’s just trying to be ballparking what their calorie needs are and they don’t want to put in lettuce and spinach and that kind of stuff, or tomatoes, or just small things that they have. Like say they have a pretty big salad with a bunch of different mixed vegetables in it, I don’t think it’s that crucial to add every single different vegetable that’s in there. But if it’s things like berries or squash or something that’s higher calorie, even if it’s fairly non-starchy, I still want them to track that because that will contribute to the total amount that they’re eating.

Now if somebody’s prone to undereating, then if they leave out stuff like the veggies, that’s fine because we actually want them eating more. And if they’re eating a little bit more than what we estimated, then it’s usually a good thing for them. So I don’t necessarily worry too much if they haven’t entered in things like the non-starchy veggies.
