Do you ever use hemp protein? Any issues? This person has histamine intolerance and reacts to hydrolyzed collagen, too.

Laura Schoenfeld:  Yeah, that’s actually a good example of someone who wouldn’t do well with hydrolyzed collagen—someone with histamine intolerance or even glutamate sensitivity. Sometimes they can have sensitivity to collagen.

I have used hemp protein with some patients. I haven’t necessarily seen any issues there. That would be something that you really just have to try. Whenever somebody has sensitivities to certain protein powders, a lot of times you just have to experiment to see if something works for them.

Another option that I think works well for histamine intolerance—and again, this might potentially not work for this person—but I really like pumpkin seed protein. It’s a little bit lower as far as the protein content for the volume is concerned, so I don’t use it a lot. It’s a lot harder to get enough protein out of it, and hemp can sometimes have that problem too, where you have to be careful about what brand you get because I had tried out some hemp protein powder just to try it, and I realized that two scoops of it, which would have been 40 grams of protein in the beef or whey protein that I use, would have been 8 grams of protein. So you just have to carefully look at how much protein is actually in the product so that way you’re not just not getting what you think you’re getting, but I don’t see any reason to not try hemp protein, and like I said, pumpkin seed protein is another great one for a lot of people. It’s low FODMAP, so a lot of people with gut issues can handle it. It’s just not going to have the grams of protein in it that beef or whey or any of those higher protein foods are going to have for the same volume.
