Dr. Amy Nett: Okay so glutathione, I think there’s some uncertainty in terms of the best form of glutathione from an absorption perspective. I would say that a lot of people think maybe IV glutathione and maybe suppositories are actually ideal from an absorption perspective. But I’ve seen at least one study that suggested there was probably some value in taking oral glutathione as well. You probably do get some absorption. We most often use liposomal glutathione and see that patients do get benefit from a liposomal form of glutathione. I haven’t found any research in terms of absorption of transdermal glutathione, and I haven’t seen what Dr. Kharrazian has talked about transdermal glutathione and superoxide dismutase. And I see that’s what you mean by liposomal cream as a transdermal application. So if you mean transdermal application, the only research I could find on this was actually using transdermal glutathione for the treatment of contact dermatitis. So not certain what context he was using the transdermal glutathione in.
And then in terms of the superoxide dismutase, I haven’t found a lot of research on the use of superoxide dismutase supplementation in humans period, whether it’s oral supplementation, transdermal. So again, there’s a question in my mind both as to the absorption of transdermal superoxide dismutase but there’s also some question in my mind as to the role of supplementing with superoxide dismutase. And I say that in part because remember when we all used to think antioxidants, we should all be supplementing with high-dose vitamin C and high-dose antioxidants. And then we said, well, wait a minute maybe there’s actually a difference between antioxidants that we take in through food and antioxidants that we’re taking in through supplement form. We now know that high-dose antioxidants like high-dose vitamin C actually will then become a pro-oxidant.
So again, personally, I think I would like to see a little bit more in the way of research before I start using superoxide dismutase more routinely. And again, I don’t have the context of what Dr. Kharrazian was recommending, the liposomal cream of glutathione and superoxide dismutase for maybe there are some situations where it’s more appropriate, but it isn’t something we’ve started using. So again, if there’s more information around, we would certainly be interested in looking at that.
