As I mentioned, though, using things like American Gut and uBiome to make individual clinical decisions is premature, in my opinion and in the opinion of a lot of the top scientists that are studying the microbiome, like Rob Knight. It can be used in time series to identify issues or measure the effects of an intervention. For example, if you want to test a patient before they start a probiotic or prebiotic protocol and then test them after they finish or midway and you want to see what effect that has, that’s a useful way of employing that kind of testing, but just looking at an individual test result and coming to conclusions and making treatment decisions based on that, I don’t think we’re quite there yet.
