A person with HPA-D is not hungry and feels nauseous in the morning. Anything to reduce nausea and still get a breakfast in?

Laura Schoenfeld:  That can be really tricky because one of the reasons why some people don’t have hunger in the morning is because they don’t eat in the morning. I’ve had some clients before that they didn’t realize that they would be hungry in the morning and that’s why they had been skipping breakfast, and once they did actually start eating breakfast, they started to get that hunger back.

In the meantime, if you’re trying to help that person in the morning when they are feeling nauseous and not hungry, first of all, any type of normal nausea reducer, so maybe ginger tea would be a really good option for them. Put a little honey in it or something so it tastes good. That would be a nice way to get the morning started and see if that can reduce the nausea. As far as the foods themselves, I’d probably stick to carbs, in general. I know that sounds a little strange, but usually nausea is going to respond better to a carb-dense meal than something like meat or vegetables with fat on them. So maybe just try to do some sweet potato or some fruit or something that’s lighter and isn’t going to make them feel worse. Then do a ramp-up period where you try to get them to actually start eating more and eating regularly at breakfast and actually stimulating that appetite in the morning. That can be pretty tricky because it’s a chicken-and-egg scenario. Like, were they nauseous and not hungry first, and that’s why they stopped eating? Or did they stop eating and now the thought of eating in the morning is difficult for them?

Yeah, I would definitely do ginger tea with honey in it to start. A little bit of that glucose could potentially actually help them start to feel a little hungrier, so that’s why I would definitely add the honey into it and not just have pure ginger tea that has no calories in it. Yeah, that would be the best strategy I could think of to help that person in the short term.
