Dr. Amy Nett: Well, no, but I don’t have a large pediatric practice, so I can’t say that I routinely advise patients to do anything with toddlers because I just don’t have a lot of toddlers in my practice. If I’m seeing a toddler, it’s because they’re pretty sick, and in that case, yes, I would recommend cod liver oil and organ meat. Intuitively, yes, it makes sense to me to recommend supplementing with cod liver oil. I don’t think I would do, like, vitamin D and vitamin A outside of cod liver oil. I like the synergistic blend. But, yeah, in general, with my patients, I would suggest that as soon as they can, get the kids eating organ meats and cod liver oil. I think I’ve said this before, some of my patients who are on it in terms of this stuff start their babies on liver really early. One of my patient’s daughters just thinks that pate is like ice cream. The daughter is probably 10 months now, and every time she gets pate it’s just like the best thing ever. I’m sure there are a lot of us who wish we had a taste for organ meat because I think a lot of us can’t stand it.
So get kids eating organ meats early if you can. I think cod liver oil, it depends on the size of the kid. If it’s a toddler, maybe just something like a quarter teaspoon, a pretty low dose. It depends what the rest of the diet looks like, how much sun exposure they get, probably pretty little sun exposure in toddlers. Yeah, just do something like maybe a quarter of a teaspoon. Again, I don’t have a large pediatric practice, so I don’t have as much experience there, but intuitively it makes sense to me, and in general, I do make that recommendation for my patients when they have kids. Hopefully that helps somewhat.
